We like to bring a bit of variety to these newsletters - long and short, fun or serious, words and pictures. This time it’s short, fun, and pictures. Pictures of Greek cats, to be precise.
Regular visitors to Greece will know that cats are your constant companions, especially if you’re eating fish in an outdoor taverna. Or even an indoor taverna. We’ve been dining indoors on chilly evenings and the cats just keep on coming, undeterred by the waiter’s half-hearted attempts to keep them out.
Cats are everywhere in Greece, and some of them are as cute as can be. You’ll find cat calendars on sale alongside the other Greek souvenirs like evil eyes and phallic postcards. You can even find them on Amazon.
Before leaving you to browse through some pictures of Greek cats, here’s a recent story about a cat, the Acropolis, and Google Maps:

All these cats have also reminded us of a funny dog story when we visited Sigri on Lesbos. We were dining outside in a busy taverna by the waterfront. A showy young couple came in and the guy moved their table away from the others so they were sitting by themselves, as if on a stage in front of the entire taverna.
The couple began smooching in an embarrassingly public way, and though you tried not to look, everyone was watching the performance. The guy had taken off his pristine white jacket and hung it over the back of his chair. While our eyes were on them, and their eyes were on each other, a dog came along, cocked its leg and marked its territory… the back of his chair. Neither of them saw it but the entire taverna burst out laughing.
But back to cats, and here’s a book we’re going to be getting a copy of and look forward to reading. It sounds like a good story: Herding Cats and Other Greek Tales.
Till next time.
